- It is a single character: it survives copy and paste into any text field and counts as one character against limits.
The em dash marks a break in a sentence stronger than a comma, and pairs of them set off an aside. It is as wide as the font's point size, noticeably longer than the en dash and the hyphen. Style guides differ on spacing: AP puts a space on each side, Chicago sets it closed.
